ABOUT

ABOUT ME

I am a theatre director, actress and teacher with extensive international experience. In 2014 I was appointed Subject Leader of Acting at Bath Spa University.

I have a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of Exeter, a BA (Hons) Degree in Performance Arts from Middlesex University and also studied at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris (1987- 89).

My research explores embodied approaches to contemporary performance practice and performer training. Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary insights including environmental humanities, phenomenology, cognitive studies, anthropology, material engagement theory and the earth sciences, I interrogate the dynamic relationship between imagination, the body and environments. How can these processes of situated creativity highlight the challenges faced by communities surviving in volatile environments? Building on my extensive international experience as a theatre-maker, teacher and researcher in Scandinavia, Europe and South America, this research is transnational.

In 1989, I co-founded the La Mancha International Theatre Company with Rodrigo Malbrán and continue to be its UK Artistic Director. The company has produced over twenty-five theatre projects, performing throughout the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Central and South America. Each production has used the devising process to create highly visual new work and theatrical adaptations.

In 1995, I co-founded La Mancha International School of Image and Gesture in Santiago, Chile. The School offers professional training in contemporary theatre making and postgraduate courses in acting, directing, teaching and theatre in Human Development.
